Some Worker Designs Regarding Combination

Trying to figure out how the workers combine together - what mechanism works better? I don't want that looks like a Transformer style, but need some kinds of mechanism that can fit into the world. Mechanical design is never my specialty...

Protagonist Design Struggle

Right now, I'm struggling with my protagonist's character design... My instructor told me that she likes my first design way more than the latest one, she thinks I need a simple design and the latest one is too complicate.

I wanted to show more personality to the character through attire and props, and want more details added into the world, thus I designed the latest one. Because I think I need a more believable world that can convince audience to have a sense of reality, but not that I want it becomes photo realistic. I was doubted the simple cartoon-ish flat-shaded kind of design will work.

After my instructor talked to me, I start to doubt my new design... :P I know a simpler design will save a lot time, but which one will convey a better message...?

For now, here will be a place that shows the progress of my MFA thesis project, which will become an awesome animation short film :P And later I'll add more other animation-related progress or thoughts beyond my thesis.
